Homemade Tortillas

Tortillas are a staple at out house. We eat a lot of fajitas and a lot of breakfast burritos.  I was browsing pinterest and came across a recipe for homemade flour tortillas. This lady did it all with her kitchen aid. She has a pasta roller attachment for her kitchen aid and uses that to roll out the tortillas. I don't have a past a roller so I rolled them out with a rolling pin. It was a little time consuming but it certainly wasn't difficult and I was probably able to make my tortillas a little larger that way. These tortillas tasted great. The good thing about this recipe is that it is easy to reduce. I cut eveything to 3/4 of the original quantities and got around 16 medium tortillas.  The original poster got 32 small tortillas with the full recipe.

Homemade Flour Tortillas
  • 4 cups flour, all-purpose or high-gluten bread; you can substitute up to 1 cup with whole wheat or spelt flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
Combine flour and salt.Cut shortening into flour/salt mixture using a pastry cutter. Add warm water.Knead using the dough hook until the mixture comes together in a ball.Keep dividing the dough in half until you get 32 balls.

If you have time, let dough rest at least 30 minutes. Heat a skillet over medium high or high depending on how fast you want to work. Rolls out balls into a thin flat circles using a rolling pin, or feed through a pasta roller set at 2 for the thickness a couple of times.Cook the tortilla about 5 to 15 seconds per side depending on the temperature of your skillet.

  2. We are completely obsessed with tortillas and are sad now that we've left New Mexico and can no longer buy good tortillas in the store. The most difficult thing about making your own tortillas is rolling them out thin enough. Thicker, hand rolled tortillas are great for soft tacos, dipping, and snacking, but don't work as well for burritos or rolling. What a great idea though, to use a pasta roller. I make tortillas fairly often (using a very similar recipe to this one) and I'd love to be able to get them flatter. It's also difficult to keep them round. Any tips on keeping stuff round when you roll it out? Even starting with a ball, I always end up with oblongs and other weird shapes.

    1. I've never really thought about what I do to make sure the stuff I roll out stays round. I would recommend alternating every roll. DO one North/south roll and then do one east/west roll, if that makes sense. I just keep an on edged that are getting left behind and roll some dough that direction. Trust me, I still ended up with some funny shaped tortillas too.

  3. Erin,
Your Tortillas look so good, you did a great job of rolling them out. Mine sometimes don't look that perfect, I have all kinds of shapes, but they sure are good. Hope you are having a great week and thank you so much for sharing with Full Plate Thursday.
    Happy St. Patrick's Day!

  5. I have to try this recipe! Thank you for sharing! I used to make tortillas with my grandma all the time when I was a little girl. I haven't made them in probably 12 yrs since she passed away. I keep wanting to try it on my own but I think about all the lard she would put into it and I think I'm good without it haha. But I would love to try this recipe with shortening instead. And don't worry, rolling them out is the same old fashion way my grandma did it, and let me tell you with enough practice you'll be rolling them out super fast! :)

  6. Try your local Mexican market or kitchen store. There's a tortilla press that is what they use in Mexico. They look like this: http://www.keeperofthehome.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/archive/6a00e54f14494b8834011571cce24b970b-800wi

  8. I love tortillas and always wondered how to make them. Now I see how easy they are, I can't believe I haven't tried to make them before. I made up a pot of chilli con carne today - think I might whip some of these up tomorrow and have a true homemade meal for dinner! Thanks for sharing.

I'm sorry, but I've turned word verification on again. I hate trying to decipher the words just as much as anyone, but I'm getting way too much spam. I tried doing comment moderation as people suggested but the number or spam comments I had to sift through was ridiculous. I appreciate your comments and didn't want them to get lost among the spam. Hopefully, I can reduce the amount of spam and turn the word verification off soon.
